Medicare Rebates

If you are eligible for a Medicare rebate, you can claim this rebate on the spot via our HICAPS electronic claims system.

Mental Health Issues

Mental Health Issues: Are eligible for a Medicare rebate between $84.50 and $124.50 per session under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Scheme. This rebate applies to services that have been referred for by your GP, whereby they have assessed that there is a significant mental health difficulty and where there is a Mental Health Care Plan in place.

When referred under the Better Access to Mental Health Care scheme, Medicare eligible services are limited to 10 individual sessions per client, per calendar year, with a review by the referring practitioner required after the initial 6 sessions. Please click here for further information.

Your psychologist can only provide you with a Medicare valid receipt (which you will need to claim the rebate) if:

  • You are able to provide a Referral letter from your GP that is dated and signed by your GP and addressed to your treating psychologist AND
  • your GP has completed a Mental Health Care Plan AND
  • the person identified on the Mental Health Care Plan attends the session.

Your psychologist can provide you with valid Medicare receipts for up to six sessions (or only as specified if a reduced number has been recommended by the referring practitioner).
If you wish to claim the Medicare rebate for additional sessions, you must attend a review with your GP and provide your psychologist with a letter of approval before, or during, your seventh session. If your Mental Health Care Plan is not reviewed prior to your 7th session, your psychologist can not issue you with a valid receipt for Medicare.

Paediatricians and Psychiatrists can refer to psychologists for Medicare eligible services. A Mental Health Care Plan is not required; however, you do require a referral letter.

Autism and other pervasive developmental disorders

There is a Medicare rebate of $84.80 per session for the assessment of children with autism or any other pervasive developmental disorder. Click here for further information.
The same rebate applies for treatment sessions. Click here for further information.

Pregnancy support counselling

There is a Medicare rebate of $62.20 for pregnancy support counselling. Click here for further information.

Private Health Insurance

Most private health insurers offer a rebate for psychological services. Some health funds also require a medical referral. Contact your insurer for further information. You can instantly claim your private health fund rebates at Melbourne Children's Psychology Clinic via our HICAPS electronic claims system. You do not need to pay the full fee; you only need to pay the 'gap' between the rebate and the full fee.

Reduced Rates

Reduced rates are available for families with health care cards for appointments scheduled in business hours (9-5 Mon to Fri).  Please bring your health care card with you to your first appointment.

You may be eligible to receive further reductions once your safety net threshold has been reached. For more information click here.
